Velda's Craft Day - Making Aprons

Our group is getting smaller and smaller. Curious to see if it will still happen if one more person moves away!

Apron

1 ¼ yard of 2 contrasting fabrics—makes 4 aprons

Cut 2 squares approximately 22” wide and long removing the selvages. (I cut the fabric down the middle lengthwise first.) Cut 4 strips 4” X 22”. Cut 2 triangles 6” on two sides. Cut 2 small rectangles 4” X 5”. Cut 6 strips 2” X 22”. Cut 2 6” squares for the pockets and trim each side up 1 ½ inch to make point in the middle bottom of the pocket. (Repeat all of this in the contrasting fabric.) One large button is needed for each apron as well as 1 package of medium rick rack of the same color. All seams are 1/4 " with no cut off on the serger.

1. Serge a small 4X5” piece to a long 4” piece.

2. Serge the other long 4” piece to one edge of large square of contrasting fabric. Then serge the first 4”long piece to the side next to the other one so the contrasting fabric makes a “V” on the edges of the 22” piece. Trim to make square.

3. Serge the long edge of the large triangle and the top of the pocket. These should be of the contrasting fabric.

4. Place the triangle on the large square (right sides together) and stitch ¼ inch from the edge on 2 sides. Serge all around the large square and then turn the triangle and press.

5. Attach rick rack to the two sides of the triangle and along the “V” where the two fabrics meet at the bottom and also on the top of the pocket.

6. Stitch down the long edge of the triangle so it doesn’t move. Fold over and press.

7. Fold all edges of the pocket and press. Then center it and attach it to the apron.

8. Fold all edges under and stitch about ¼ " all around the apron.

9. Stitch long strips together and turn and press to make the neck and side straps. Cut to fit neck making sure you can get your head through the hole and attach to top of apron. Attach the ties to the sides about 5 inches up from the border seam. Sew on button.
